Forward 6, Fall Back 8
Bill Litchman, caller, in the traditional western style of square dance. This clip includes a walkthrough. The basic idea of this dance is a simple one, but Bill has fun mixing up the calls to keep dancers on their toes. The tune is the well-known Turkey in the Straw. Recorded at Dare To Be Square, Brasstown, NC, November 19, 2011.

Six Pass Thru

Wrong Way Thar
Bob Dalsemer calls this figure, which he credits to Modern Square Dancing by Milly Riley. It features both a regular Allemande Thar figure and a "Wrong Way" Thar. This clip includes a walkthrough. The Rout
Tony Parkes, caller. This clip includes a walkthrough. The basic figures of the dance (ladies chain across the set and along a line, or a right and left through) goes back to quadrilles of the 19th century, but the opening figure to form the lines of four seems to be more recent. The tune is Glise de Sherbrooke. Recorded at Dare To Be Square, Brasstown, NC, November 19, 2011.

Having just introduced Swing Thru, Run, and Trade, Jim here incorporates them into a singing call. (For the preceding introduction and dance, watch MWSD 3a in this series.)

MWSD 3a - Swing Thru
Jim taught Swing Thru, a figure that opened up exciting new choreographic possibilities and dramatically changed MWSD. He demonstrated how this move led rapidly to the introduction of two other MWSD calls, Run and Trade. The dancing starts at 2:20; the recording is "Arreando Hoedown," Rawhide #520.

MWSD 2a - Star Thru & Square Thru
In this sequence of three clips (2a-2c) Jim Mayo introduces Star Thru and Square Thru. In this clip he teaches the basic figures; in 2b he calls patter and in 2c he uses those figures in a singing call. For many of the 70 dancers at the weekend, Jim's sessions were their first experience dancing modern squares, with no walkthroughs and ever-changing calls.
